Dr. Lothar Ledderose was appointed as Director of the Center for Chinese Visual Studies in 2014

The Center for Chinese Visual Studies (CCVS) was initiated by China Academy of Art in 2013. As facing the new requirements brought on by the “visual turn” in global culture, responding to the novel traits and circumstances of cultural production and information dissemination in an age of “Mega-Data”, “Poly-Media” and the “Post-Internet”, the CCVS practice focuses on three key areas—”Visual Sinology”, “Rural Studies” and “Contemporary Visual Production”. The CCVS’ activities are characterised by multidisciplinary collaboration, working to revive the Chinese tradition through contemporary innovation. The Center is invested in establishing a system of China studies that takes research in visual culture. The CCVS unites prominent centers for China studies from all over the world, bringing together international talents to build a global network for education in Chinese art and visual culture.

Research Areas

Visual Sinology—Reviving the Chinese Visual Canon

In order to reviving the “Canons” of Chinese visual culture, we attempt to overcome the conventional models of Sinology and China Studies in the global context, and build an embodied system for China studies based on the calligraphy and Chinese painting.

Rural Studies—Reconstructing Native Chinese Visual Arts

On the basis of native Chinese visual cultural resources, we aim to revive the traditional aesthetic values of Chinese artifacts, to make native spaces for visual art and to rebuild the local visual cultures, to promote the essence of Chinese culture in the international context, whilst to relocate the traditional heritage within contemporary reality. Through cultivating a people’s culture with a basis in a collective sense of locality, we also hope to develop a kind of contemporary Chinese lifestyle.

Contemporary Visual Production—Innovation and Experiment in Contemporary Chinese Art

Relying upon national platforms for international cultural exchange, we aim to bring about Chinese art experimentations, promote their influence worldwide, and establish the “contemporary Chinese art” that is rooted in native realities and everyday life, thus making a space for the Chinese arts to practice globally.
