Programme Overview

The Game Art and Design programme is one of the earliest in China to offer teaching and research in interactive media and game art. The programme aims to cultivate top-tier, exceptionally innovative ‘Four-Competence’ talents who possess an internationally forward-looking perspective, are deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and use game-based thinking to envision future societal landscapes. It is dedicated to innovation in interactive media and game works empowered by ‘Chinese-style futurism’ and diverse digital media, whilst deeply reflecting on the positive value and significance of games for social development. The programme actively practises and expands teaching, research and creative work in the fields of game art and mechanics, interactive experiences and narrative, digital avatars, XR and AI-generated content (AIGC). The programme consistently focuses on the ontological nature of games from an Oriental aesthetic perspective, emphasising social awareness and the enhancement of artistic and intellectual literacy. It maintains long-term strategic partnerships for joint talent development with leading gaming companies, including Tencent, NetEase, miHoYo and Game Science, and has supplied top-tier creative talent in game art and design to China and the wider world.

Curriculum Overview

·Curriculum Structure

This programme follows a tiered, step-by-step curriculum system designed to progressively consolidate students’ professional skills. The first year focuses on general subject knowledge and foundational teaching. Through courses such as drawing, colour theory, creative fundamentals and traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, students develop their spatial perception, aesthetic expression and basic research skills. Complemented by specialised workshops and instruction in basic tools, this lays a solid foundation for advanced study in the discipline. The second year concentrates on enhancing students’ professional foundations. Through collaborative teaching by both on-campus faculty and external specialists, the programme covers all core knowledge areas whilst incorporating cutting-edge content from interactive media and game art. Platforms such as industry-academia partnerships, extension workshops and summer camps are utilised to strengthen students’ professional practical skills and teamwork abilities. The third and fourth years centre on specialised tracks, project-based courses and final-year projects. Centred on social and cultural themes, the programme employs interdisciplinary, inquiry-based teaching to foster innovative thinking. Teaching processes are dynamically monitored throughout, and teaching strategies are optimised to ensure high-level educational outcomes.
