Program Overview

The Fine Arts Education program champions the foundational principles of aesthetic education of the National Academy of Arts at its founding. Responding to the evolving demands of China’s art education, the program is firmly rooted in contemporary local contexts while embracing a global perspective. Guided by the academic tenets of "Artistic Intellect" and "New Humanistic Education," it leverages arts education as a transformative force to foster modern character development, cultivating innovative, interdisciplinary professionals who possess a robust blend of creative studio experience, teaching competence, and humanistic scholarship.

The program's educational ethos centers on "Versatile Mastery through Shared Methodologies, Intertwining Studio Practice with Critical Theory." the program expands the scope of arts education by integrating diverse technical skills with creative studio experience. Concurrently, the program deepens its intellectual depth by utilizing research to advance visual literacy, art historical discourse, and philosophical inquiry. Through socially engaged practices across schools, cultural institutions, urban and rural communities, and natural settings, the program actively reimagines traditional paradigms to redefine the social coordinates of art education.

Currently, the program is designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program and features three courses recognized as Provincial First-Class Courses.

Course Overview

Curriculum Framework

First Year | Foundational Formative Arts: Undergraduate studies begin with immersive training in the Department of Foundational Formative Arts. This critical stage solidifies students' formative and representational skills while establishing a preliminary understanding of creative language, artistic styles, and formal expressions.

Second Year | Interdisciplinary Studio & Core Pillars: Upon formally entering the college, students navigate a credit-based curriculum driven by two interconnected academic tracks. On one hand, the core course Art Techniques and Principles anchors students in fine arts methodologies through the cross-pollination of Chinese ink painting, oil painting, and printmaking, grounding their practice in the medium specificity of fine arts and strengthening their foundational studio-to-pedagogy articulation. Concurrently, Art Forms and Expression introduces critical practices in installation, media, and spatial arts, expanding the horizons of art education. On the other hand, two supporting core courses—Diagrammatic Design and Digital Media—serve as the program's twin pillars, equipping students with vital skills in visual synthesis and digital construction for educational applications.

Third Year | Practicum & Specialized Pathways: In the fall semester, the cornerstone courses Social Research and Aesthetic Practice and Curriculum Analysis and Creative Teaching prioritize real-world engagement. By embedding themselves in communities, cultural institutions, and active classrooms, students internalize their professional identity and navigate diverse educational ecosystems. In the spring semester, the curriculum branches into two distinct trajectories: Public Art Education and School-Based Teacher Education. This progressive synthesis of knowledge and practice allows students to select a pathway aligned with their personal research interests or career goals, guiding them into specialized modules that lay the groundwork for their Capstone Thesis and field placements.

Fourth Year | Thesis & Synthesis: The final year culminates in a mentor-led Capstone Thesis system. This rigorous phase organically synthesizes general education, foundational studio work, specialized pathways, project-based learning, and co-curricular workshops—achieving a unified integration of theoretical inquiry, practical training, and creative execution.
