The School of Continuing Education is a distinctive secondary school of the China Academy of Art dedicated to lifelong education and social aesthetic education. Approved by the Ministry of Culture in 1993, it was among the first higher art institutions in China to offer part-time degree programs and non-degree art education to students nationwide. It carries the important mission of advancing aesthetic education for all, empowering social development, and contributing to the building of a learning society. Rooted in the arts and committed to lifelong education, the School strengthens vocational training and enriches aesthetic education for everyday life—striving to be a university of competence and a university of living.
Drawing on the Academy's profound academic legacy, distinguished faculty, and first-class facilities, the School has built a comprehensive art education and aesthetic education service system that spans a wide range of disciplines, levels, formats, and learners. It covers traditional strengths such as Chinese Painting, Calligraphy, Oil Painting & Sculpture, Visual Communication Design, Handicraft Art and Environmental Art. It also focuses on the interdisciplinary frontier areas including ideological and political aesthetic education, technological aesthetic education, art therapy and children’s aesthetic education, cultivating multi-level, application-oriented, and versatile art and aesthetic education professionals who are precisely aligned with societal needs.
The school operates under an institutional framework of one general office and seven centers, namely the General Administration Office, Academic and Vocational Education Center, Grading Examination Management Center, Advanced Studies Center, Government & Enterprise Talent Training Center, Aesthetic Education Development and Research Center, and Online Education Center, AI Education Center. This forms a comprehensive educational system integrating teaching, research, training, service, and outreach. The School's educational offerings are organized around two core pillars: adult higher education and high-quality non-degree training programs. Non-degree programs are precisely aligned with social needs and include vocational skills training for government departments and enterprises, research & study tours and competitions for children and teenagers, as well as advanced master classes with renowned artists, and graded arts proficiency examinations—all closely aligned with national strategies for political, economic, cultural and social advancement.
As a key platform for art talent cultivation and social aesthetic education in Zhejiang Province, the School has been accredited with multiple important designations, including the Training Base for Provincial Cadres, the Continuing Education Base for Professional and Technical Personnel, the Popularization Base for Social Sciences of Zhejiang Province. It is also a member of the Alliance for the "Enriching People with Arts" Program & Public Cultural Community Construction, the Alliance of Zhejiang Universities for Empowering Traditional Classic Industries through Science and Education, and the Comprehensive Educational Practice & Experience Base of Zhejiang Universities.
The School continues to make aesthetic education resources widely accessible and equitably shared. Every year, around 4 million people participate in its online and offline activities including research tours, exhibitions, competitions and assessments. As a vital platform for China Academy of Art to serve the public, promote social aesthetic education, and connect with the public, the School consistently contributes to the advancement of public artistic literacy, the development of the art industry, and the enrichment of public culture.
