1. Program Overview
Adhering to the teaching philosophy of "revitalising traditional craftsmanship, focusing on Oriental aesthetics, and being rooted in contemporary life," the Ceramic Art Design program adopts a studio-based, holistic educational model. Moving beyond a narrow specialisation, it pursues a holistic approach that balances breadth and depth, cultivating versatile ceramic talents who are proficient in the synthesis of historical heritage and contemporary vision, artistic practice and theoretical inquiry, moral integrity and scholarly attainment, and Chinese roots with global perspectives. Grounded in the rich humanities tradition of our institution, the programme strives to build a contemporary ceramic discipline that embodies both experimental spirit and distinct Chinese cultural heritage. It is committed to preserving the ceramic lineage, advancing theoretical innovation, and establishing a Chinese benchmark for higher education in ceramics. Ultimately, it aims to nurture creators and designers who are well-adapted to the new era, possess an international outlook, and are capable of promoting China's outstanding ceramic culture to the world.
2. Curriculum Introduction
Curriculum Structure
After being admitted to the program through the major selection process in their second year, students first receive foundational training in plastic arts and ceramic material craftsmanship to build basic ceramic literacy and hands-on skills. They systematically study core processes of ceramic materials and forming to establish a comprehensive framework of craft knowledge. In the junior year, students take core specialized modules covering functional wares and ceramic sculpture, and receive advanced training in firing techniques. In the fourth year, a supervisor-led thesis and graduation project integrates foundational training, core specialized coursework, interdisciplinary practice, and achievement translation. The full-cycle workshops connect theoretical learning, craft practice, artistic creation, and exhibition presentation, enabling the integration of traditional cultural heritage and contemporary ceramic design and creation.
At the postgraduate level, greater emphasis is placed on comprehensive artistic creation through international workshops and university-enterprise collaborative projects.
