·Traditional Photography I – Film Photography

This core course is designed for second-year photography majors. Its goal is to enable students to systematically master the full workflow of analog photography in dialogue and integration with digital imaging, to understand the scope of photographic aesthetics, to develop technical proficiency in image-making, and to expand their conceptual approach to working with photographic media. Grounded in inheritance, integration, and innovation, the course is dedicated to the exploration of photographic language as art, the development of visual aesthetics, and the articulation of image-based cultural meaning.

The course was approved as a Provincial First-Class Course in 2020, and its accompanying textbook, The Art of Film Photography in the Digital Age, has been designated as a key textbook project under Zhejiang Province's 14th Five-Year Plan.

·Fundamentals of Photographic Media

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the basic knowledge and skills of photographic media, with a strong theoretical emphasis. It examines photographic media from multiple perspectives—including definition, technical characteristics, artistic expression, the principles of classical photographic processes, and socio-cultural functions—supported by hands-on courses in historical processes to provide students with a systematic theoretical framework. The course explores and emphasizes the interconnected relationship between tools, methods, and creative practice. Upon completion, students will be able to use the language of photographic media in artistic creation, to understand the significance and value of photography in contemporary art and culture, and to apply this understanding in their own creative work.

·Commercial Photography

This course combines theoretical instruction with practical shooting to introduce students to the fundamental structures, characteristics, working methods, and operational models of commercial advertising photography, as well as related professional knowledge in the field. Building on this foundation, it emphasizes hands-on training in advertising photography techniques—including proficiency in indoor flash lighting, the use of medium-format cameras, and the specific technical requirements for photographing different materials. The course prioritizes hands-on skills and the development of sound working habits, while providing an overall understanding of the operational models of advertising photography in line with current industry trends.

·Classical Photographic Processes

This course traces the evolution of alternative photographic processes and workflows across the history of photography, examining how photography—through the continuous integration of technology and art—gradually entered and came to shape the fields of art, commerce, and society through its evolving techniques. The study and practice of classical photographic processes is also central to the department's "bipolar teaching" system, which intentionally places classical processes and AI-generated imaging at opposite ends of the temporal, material, and operational spectrum. This approach not only enables students to grasp the foundational principles of photographic media language, but also builds a rich repository of media vocabularies for their creative practice.
