The Future Writing: Creative Practice and Research program responds to the profound transformation of Chinese writing in the digital age, where traditional handwriting has largely been replaced by phonetic input methods on computers and mobile devices. Addressing this shift, the programme critically examines how the practice of Chinese writing can be sustained, revitalized, and reimagined for the future, while exploring how emerging technologies can expand the expressive possibilities of Chinese script and renew the aesthetic traditions of Chinese characters as a vital component of visual culture.
This research direction adopts a multi-dimensional approach to the future of Chinese writing, with a focus on the integration of new technologies with Chinese character writing, hypertext, avant-garde poetics, gesture input, mobile writing, social media-based collaborative writing, virtual reality writing, and AI-generated writing.
