The Frontier Studies in Art–Technology Integration program explores the transformative impact of emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence, mixed reality, and blockchain—on the future of artistic creation and visual culture. Focusing on innovative practices and applied research at the intersection of art and technology, the programme investigates how AI-driven creative systems, computational methods, and digital media are reshaping artistic production, visual expression, and aesthetic experience.
The programme emphasizes the development of new artistic languages enabled by intelligent technologies and digital media. By integrating mixed reality and spatial computing, students explore immersive and interactive modes of exhibition and artistic presentation that seamlessly merge physical and virtual environments. Research also examines how distributed network technologies can support new models of artistic creation, exhibition, dissemination, and digital asset circulation, expanding the practical applications and public engagement of digital art.
Grounded in the principles of Eastern aesthetics, the programme seeks to foster a meaningful dialogue between traditional aesthetic thought and contemporary digital technologies. Through experimental research in human–AI collaboration and interdisciplinary creative practice, students investigate emerging methodologies and expressive paradigms suited to today’s rapidly evolving creative landscape. Combining practice-led innovation with rigorous theoretical inquiry, the programme cultivates interdisciplinary professionals equipped with strong artistic foundations, advanced technological competencies, and a forward-looking vision for the future of art–technology integration.
19. Direction: Artificial Intelligence and Artistic Intelligence

The Artificial Intelligence and Artistic Intelligence program has been established in response to the rapid evolution of the age of artificial intelligence. Taking a comparative methodological approach, the programme positions artificial intelligence and artistic intelligence—two distinctive forms of human creation—as complementary frameworks through which to investigate one of the most fundamental questions in the arts and humanities: the nature and origins of creativity. Through the integration of theoretical inquiry and creative practice, it seeks to deepen understanding of the mechanisms that drive creative thought and artistic innovation.
Keeping pace with the accelerating development of AI technologies, the programme examines the underlying principles governing collaboration between human intelligence and artificial intelligence in artistic contexts. It explores how these two forms of intelligence are generated, applied, and transformed across different domains of society, with particular attention to artistic practice, creative production, and the cultivation of innovation. Rather than viewing AI solely as a technological tool, the programme investigates its evolving relationship with human cognition, imagination, and aesthetic judgment.
Building upon the China Academy of Art’s longstanding tradition of research into artistic intelligence, the programme reconsiders the historical development of human intellect, artistic cognition, and the evolution of perception within the context of artificial intelligence. It critically re-examines artistic creation as a defining expression of human creativity, exploring its enduring role as a productive force in the broader development of human civilization.
