HANGZHOU, CHINA—Timed to the ninetieth anniversary of the school's founding, the China Academy of Art opened the China Design Museum on April 8, Lisa Movius reports for The Art Newspaper. The inaugural program of exhibitions features a retrospective of Alvaro Siza, the building's architect, among four others, including the museum's holdings of Western design objects, a menswear collection by costume designer Massimo Osti, a survey of works by designer Xiang Peng, and "Bauhaus Imaginista: Moving Away," an international research project celebrating the centenary of the Bauhaus.

"Bauhaus Imaginista" is presented in conjunction with National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow; and Sesc Pompéia, S?o Paulo. Workshops will be held in Rabat, New York, Delhi, and Lagos. The exhibition is part of a long-term collaboration between China Academy of Art and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

China Design Museum is the country's second design museum, following Shenzhen's Design Society, which opened in December 2017 in partnership with London's Victoria & Albert Museum. "Our country needs a design museum," China Design Museum Zhang Chunyun said. "CAA, as a pioneer of social art education, has the responsibility and ambition to realize it."
