Chen was enrolled in the Department of Oil Painting at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (predecessor of CAA) in 1984. Upon graduation, he stayed on to teach in the Affiliated High School to CAA where he became the head of the professional teaching and research department in 1997 after studying at CAA teaching assistant class from 1992 to 1993. From 2002 to 2007, he taught at the School of Visual Art as the Vice Chair of the Department of Painting, and now he is working at the School of Art Administration and Education, CAA.

He has participated in the Chinese Pioneers Oil Painting Exhibition in Japan, the 1st Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition, the Contemporary Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition in Japan, the Oil Painting Exhibition of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, and the 8th Chinese National Exhibition of Art Works, etc.
