The China Academy of Art began its cultural heritage research when it was called National Academy of Art, which was established in 1928. Such research endeavors are crucial to CAA's art education and academic research. In the early 1950s, CAA created the "Office of Fork Art Heritage Research". In the late 1950s, the "Department of Folk Art" came into being. From the 1980s, CAA took the lead in enrolling the first cohort of postgraduates in folk art after the national college entrance examination was resumed in China. Academic treasures in the domain of cultural heritage research left by the older generations of CAA have been leading the new generations forward. Under the auspice of the academy, the Department of Design Arts, School of Design applied for setting up the "Zhejiang Research Base for Intangible Cultural Heritage" at CAA in 2008, as global cultural heritage research was booming. The base has been working on intangible cultural heritage projects, such as related research theories and methodologies, protection strategies and management rules, construction of a related education system, investigation and research, and the establishment of a database. In 2009, CAA created the "Cultural Heritage Research Center" based on the base, expanding its areas of research to many other areas covering intangible and tangible cultural heritages.
