The China Academy of Art was one of the first institutions of higher education in China to welcome international students. The China-Europe Humanities and Arts Exchange School Alliance of the Ministry of Education was founded on the initiative of the China Academy of Art. As one of the earliest significant universities in Zhejiang Province, the China Academy of Art has been recognized for its excellence in regards to internationalization. It is among the first of its kind to serve as a demonstration center to showcase best practices in international education.
Across Europe, Asia, North America, Oceania, etc., the China Academy of Art has formally formed 100+ cooperation agreements at various levels, allowing for inter-school collaboration with over a hundred abroad art institutions and universities. The Academy has close ties with faculty at other prestigious art schools across the world, including the Royal Academy of Arts in the United Kingdom, the Politecnico di Milano in Italy, the Parsons School of Design in the United States, and the Chiba University in Japan. The 2019 European League of Institutes of the Arts conference was held at the Academy.

The China Academy of Art hosted over ten distinct events, including exhibitions and contests such as Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, China International Poster Biennial, International Creative Pattern Design Competition, China Design Intelligence Award, West Lake International Documentary Festival, International Contemporary Ceramic Art Biennale, Hangzhou International Contemporary Glass Art Triennial, Contemporary International Jewelry and Metal Art Triennial, Hangzhou International Contemporary Lacquer & Wood Art Exhibition, International Youth Animation Biennial, International Youth Illustration and Cartoon Biennial, INTER YOUTH Painting Exhibition of International Art Institutes, and Platinum Originality International University Students Graphic Design Competition. The Academy has more than 50 long-term experts from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan and overseas. In 2021, 9 international courses (including 4 online courses) and 41 online international workshops were available to 1,307 students, accounting for about 15 % of all students.
Activities for international cultural interaction, such as a banquet for the spouses of G20 leaders during the Hangzhou Summit, “Impression of ASEAN: An Exhibition of Landscape Paintings by Teachers of CAA”, “Poetic Zhejiang Landscape: The CAA’s Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Works Exhibition” in Hungary were all expertly coordinated by the Academy. The Academy was also in charge of the visual cultural design for the G20 Hangzhou Summit, as well as the World Internet Conference venue design. In honor of the "70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China," the Academy published an epic album titled "China" (in 8 languages) that provided a panoramic view of the country's development and achievements since its inception. This album was presented as gifts to notable domestic and international guests who attended the celebration. “Schriftbilder – Bilderschrift” won the gold award of “German Design Award 2018”. The Academy has been ranked among the top 10 institutions in mainland China for its global influence and impact for many consecutive years.
