Chen is engaged in research on the theory and application of vernacular architecture systems. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Architecture, Deputy Director of the Sustainable Construction Lab, Member of the Vernacular Architecture Committee of the Architectural Society of China, and a Young and Middle-aged Academic Leader in the universities of Zhejiang Province.
