Chen was born in October 1970. He graduated from the Affiliated High School of CAA in his hometown, Hangzhou in 1989. Four years later, he obtained a bachelor's degree from the Department of Oil Painting at CAA. As a bonus for winning the Gold Award of the Chinese Young Oil Painting Talent Competition, from 2000 to 2001, he was funded to study at the Russian Repin Academy of Fine Arts. In 2002 and 2009, he graduated from the Department of Oil Painting at CAA with his master's degree and doctor's degree, respectively.
