Chen Zhengda

Chen is the responsible person for the provincial first-class course titled Multi-dimensional Designing and Planning, the 13th Five-Year Education Reform in Zhejiang Province, and the Gold Course of CAA taught by craftsmen. Moreover, Chen initiated the CAA 'Sci-Fi City Design' and took the lead to integrate science fiction settings into designing and creating in courses. He staged the "Message to 2028" special exhibition for the 90th anniversary of CAA, 2020 "Sci-Fi City Design" and other major design exhibitions. The research topic of Oriental Vision he proposed focuses on the contrast between the semantics of the East and West and aims to cultivate independent designers with Oriental aesthetics. Another research topic he put forward is the Visual Healing, which emphasizes developing the thinking and methodology for teaching design, multi-dimensional strategic thinking, scientific social research, flexible creativity training, and cross-boundary design practice, hoping to design in a caring and warm way and with a human touch in a society of utilitarianism and consumerism.


Chen's design works have won nearly 100 awards in professional exhibitions and competitions at home and abroad. Furthermore, a number of his representative works were included in major international historiographical monographs. His solo exhibition poster was presented in the sixth edition of the world's most famous historiography Meggs' History of Graphic Design' published in 2016; many of his works were collected by the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, Germany, the Poster Museum in Warsaw, Poland, the National Museum in Poznan, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Municipal Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the Lahti Poster Museum in Finland, the Museum of Modern Art in Toyama, Japan, the MonaVie Museum in Brno, Czech Republic, and the Guangdong Museum of Art. 


He is committed to promoting Chinese design and he has planned a number of professional design exhibitions and staged many domestic and international design events. Among them, the China International Poster Biennal that he co-founded in 2003 has been successfully held nine times. Chen has been chairing the Platinum Originality Graphic Design Competition and it was upgraded to an international event in 2015. There are more than 30,000 submissions each year from over 1000 Chinese and international universities, making it one of the most influential graphic design competitions for international students. 


Chen has been focusing on visual identity and brand design for years, and he has initiated and chaired nearly 100 branding and rebranding projects. For example, he developed image branding for Hangzhou 2022 4th Asian Para Games, World Internet Conference, Cross-Straits Youth Development Forum, Ningbo Railway, Wenzhou Medical University, and Zhejiang Police Academy. Besides, he rebranded Chinese private express delivery companies like STO, YunDa, and YTO. In 2019, as chief designer for the project Brand Image and Urban Furniture of Hangzhou Lakeside Pedestrian Street, Professor Chen helped the street win the title of National Demonstration Pedestrian Shopping Street. 


With city aesthetics as the theme, Professor Chen has founded and participated in the development the visual system, the urban information system, and urban furniture design in many cities, such as the aesthetic specification and design of the Hangzhou traffic information system completed in 2008, the planning and design of Hangzhou West Lake visual image system, Hangzhou outdoor electronic advertising screen as well as the image guiding system of Hangzhou Xixi Wetland Park completed in 2009.
