Born in June 1967, Lu styles himself as "Xiaoxuan", with the courtesy name "Owner of Wutong Courtyard".

He graduated from the Department of Chinese Painting at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA) in 1989 and has been teaching there ever since.
