Zhang was born in 1962. In 1985, he graduated from Professor Shu Chuanxi's Studio of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of CAA). Since then, Zhang has worked at CAA. He is currently a professor in the School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at CAA and the Director of the Research Institute of Contemporary Ink Painting.
