Return to the Five Great Mountains - The 7th Hangzhou Chinese Painting Biennale

The 7th Hangzhou Chinese Painting Biennale, themed "Return to the Five Great Mountains", kicked off at the Art Museum of China Academy of Art on April 22, 2023. The event is hosted by the China Artists Association, Zhejiang Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and China Academy of Art (CAA), and organized by the Zhejiang Artists Association, Art Museum of CAA, School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy of CAA and Zhejiang Painting Academy.


Attendees of the opening ceremony include Xu Jiang, Vice President of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and China Artists Association, President of Zhejiang Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles (ZPFLAC) and Director of the Academic Board, CAA; Ma Fenghui, Party Secretary, Vice President and Secretary-General of China Artists Association; Qian Xiaofang, Standing Committee Member of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Congress and Deputy Director of the Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee of Zhejiang; Jin Yibing, Party Secretary of CAA; Gao Shiming, President of CAA and President of Zhejiang Artists Association; Wang Ping, Party Committee Member and Deputy Secretary-General of China Artists Association; Zhao Xiaogang and Zhang Saifei, leaders of the Party Secretary Office, ZPFLAC; Shen Hao, Vice President of CAA; Xu Guoqiang, Party Committee Member and Head of the United Front Work Department, CAA. The ceremony was presided over by Lv Weigang, Party Committee Member and Secretary of the Party Secretary Office, ZPFLAC. Xu Jiang, Qian Xiaofang, Ma Fenghui, Jin Yibing, Gao Shiming, representatives of senior artists Zhuo Hejun and Wei Xiaorong, and representative of painters Xu Longsen raised the curtain for the exhibition.


Representatives of senior artists Zhuo Hejun and Wei Xiaorong; Lin Yong, member of the Editorial Board of the Zhejiang Media Group and Director of Zhejiang Satellite TV; Wang Minjie, Ru Feng, and Ying Jinfei, Vice President of Zhejiang Artists Association; directors of functional departments of CAA, special artists and young artists, friends from the cultural, art and media sector, and representatives of students and faculty members from the schools under CAA also attended the opening ceremony.


In the afternoon, over 30 scholars and artists held discussions on the topic "Portraying the Five Great Mountains with Brushes and Ink", in three sessions: "On Top of the Mountains", "Roaring Mountains and Echoing Valleys", "Passage of Time". The symposium was chaired by Wang Ping, Zhang Jie and Ru Feng.


Since its inception in 2011, the Hangzhou Chinese Painting Biennale has zeroed in on an academic objective to "review the journey of centennial development, innovate the academic language of Chinese painting, reconnect contemporary cultures, and restore the pinnacle of Eastern art" in distinctive ways. It aims to become a creation-oriented innovation platform for Chinese painting, a research-oriented academic platform, a cultural platform, and an art education platform for all. Unique forms of Chinese painting were presented from the 1st to the 6th editions, themed respectively "The Greatest Mind", "Sight in the Scroll Painting", "Masters of Brushes and Ink", "Majestic Painting", "Breeze and Mountains on Folding Screens", and "Distinguished Assembly of Artists and Masterpieces". These events showcased giant curtains, long scrolls, volumes and pages, central scrolls, folding screens, distinguished assembly paintings and other distinctive forms of Chinese painting from 256 senior, middle-aged and young artists at home and abroad.


The 7th Hangzhou Chinese Painting Biennale, themed "Return to the Five Great Mountains", showcases 228 works from 24 special artists and 15 young artists. Painting and calligraphy masters, young artists and awe-inspiring masterpieces at the Biennale will lead visitors into the core elements of the history of Chinese painting so that they can gain deep insights into the variable and miraculous laws of nature.


Academic workshops for experts and "Art Classes Around Us" for elementary and middle school students in Hangzhou will be held concurrently with the event.


The Biennale will last through May 22, 2023.
