Abstract
In this lecture, I will look into the historical background of the concept of design research in architecture, and then discuss how we understand the term today. Four key questions will be addressed in particular. How can we conceptualise different kinds of research within architecture? In what ways does design research relate to the other research disciplines in architecture? When and why did design research emerge as a distinctive methodological approach? What are the incentives or pressures for us to engage in design research in architecture today?
