Dr. Sun Yat-sen Within the Green Mountains

Artist: Mo Junjie (School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy)

Instructor: Lin Haizhong

"Of the hundreds of temples on the Western Hills, none can rival Biyun Temple's opulence." Biyun Temple was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty and later expanded during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, integrating temple buildings with a garden. The ancient temple is located on the eastern foot of Mt. Jubao, to the west while facing the east. Its multileveled halls are stacked alongside the mountain and are surrounded by tall pine and cypress trees, quiet streams, and birdsong. At its peak is a Pagoda Temple from which one may gaze up at the heavens and down at the grand halls and terraces below. Found within the temple is Shuiquan Court, a courtyard named and built for a spring (quan) and found in the most secluded spot in the temple. The artist created this painting of Biyun Temple as an attempt to gain insight into the mind of Wang Wei (a painter and poet during the Tang Dynasty; courtesy name Mojie) as he painted his snowy landscapes.

A Game of Latitude and Longitude Chess

Artist: Yang Taibei (School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy)

Instructors: Pan Wenxun, Deng Xianxian

The artwork seeks to convey the interconnectedness of crowds, drawing inspiration from parks, which are actually the most familiar scenes in everyday life. The park is always bustling with people playing chess, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. I enjoy being part of it, observing their every move, which inspires my creativity. I then try to translate the sketches of life and the careful observation of people's states into my artworks.

Heavenly Questions Series One

Artist: Yang Muyuan (School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy)

Instructor: Shen Hao

Excerpt from "Heavenly Questions," drawing inspiration from the inscriptions on Western Zhou bronze bells and tripods, in pursuit of their magnificence. Using retrospection as a means to explore Chinese traditional art, rather than treating the "restoration" of traditional forms as the ultimate pursuit, would turn tradition into a form of dependence and confinement. To truly understand tradition means to appreciate the virtues of freedom, openness, and progressiveness that are inherent in traditional art through multidimensional perspectives, it transforms tradition into a bridge that connects the past and present as well as others and oneself, guiding us to discover and attentively observe the myriad aspects of our surroundings and to exercise prudence and self-reflection.
