Abstract
We will review the possibilities with various bamboo configurations and formats of scale. How does the structural logic and composition of bamboo function as a material work in architectural, object, and as fibrous string and strip formats. We will explore joinery variations and archaic know-how on bamboo construction and design. Through previous indigenous inventions to contemporary case studies, we will review their benefits and discoveries. What are the challenges that we face when working with bamboo? Which bamboo species are suitable for product design, on a mass production vs craft scale? How do the pre-treatments and processing of bamboo affect its ecological aspects? The talk will be interactive and encourage students to engage with questions and remarks.
