안녕하세요!My name is Roh Suhyun, and I am a 2024 graduate of the School of Intermedia Art (SIMA) at the China Academy of Art. I come from Gyeonggi-do, near Seoul, South Korea. During my studies in the UK, I met a group of like-minded Chinese friends who not only enriched my life with diverse experiences but also sparked my deep interest in the multifaceted cultures of Asia. This experience became one of the key reasons I chose to pursue further studies at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.
During my postgraduate studies, my creative inspiration stemmed from profound personal and familial battles with illness, leading to a multilayered contemplation of the theme of "life and death." Throughout my creative process, I focused particularly on bodily scars and drew a parallel between them and stones in nature, discovering remarkable similarities. The weathering and metamorphosis of stone surfaces, akin to human skin scars, chronicle the passage of time and the journey of life, reflecting the cycle and renewal of both nature and individual existence.
My graduation project uses the imagery of stones, inspired by the Korean tradition of stacking stone towers in mountainous areas or temples to pray for health. These stones in my work are not real stones but handcrafted from paper, with their outer layers covered by photos of wounds taken by me and my friends, and the interiors filled with discarded paper from my friends' calligraphy practice. Though lightweight, each scar on these paper stones carries untold stories, endowing the "scar stones" with a profound significance beyond their physical weight. Through this work, I aim to transform people's negative perceptions of scars, revealing that our bodies and everything around us are integral parts of nature's perpetual transformation. We should learn to reconcile with our scars, accepting and cherishing nature's gifts.
After the graduation exhibition, my pursuit of art will not cease. I plan to continue my journey at CAA as a doctoral student, aspiring to create more profound works!
