Zou Dexin, a graduate from the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Theory and Practice Department at CAA’s School of Foundation Studies, showcased her meticulously graduation artwork “Ode to Joy” at 2024 CAA Graduation Exhibition. This artwork is created using traditional Chinese painting techniques on silk.

“Ode to Joy” conveys the beautiful essence of music and spring through its dynamic composition. In the painting, joyous musical notes seem to transform into flying birds, emerging from a classical piano and leaving behind a sheet of blank music paper blown away by the wind. The birds soar towards the blue sky, symbolizing the freedom and uplift of music. The foreground features a realistic depiction of the piano and birds, allowing viewers to feel the vividness and authenticity of the music.

In the background, a branch of blooming cherry blossoms is faintly visible through a sheer curtain. This cherry blossom is rendered in a traditional freehand style, skillfully blending modern artistic elements with classical techniques. The delicate and ethereal quality of the cherry blossoms contrasts sharply with the realistic elements in the foreground, conveying the brilliance and warmth of spring.

The entire piece demonstrates Zou’s profound reflection on contemporary life and traditional culture, presenting a unique artistic style that combines modern sensibilities with traditional charm. Through “Ode to Joy”, Zou aims to inspire viewers to deeply contemplate the relationship between music, nature, and art, while also sharing her passionate love and pursuit of life’s beauty.
