Mao Wenjing, an undergraduate graduate from the Future Media & Extended Reality Studio at CAA’s School of Design & Innovation, showcased her AI Agent installation, “Future Sample”, at the graduation exhibition, earning a gold award for her work.
“Future Sample” is a forward-thinking artistic creation that builds an experimental environment simulating a future computer system. The artist views the world as a machine in operation, using a generative agent framework based on large language models to drive virtual beings that simulate and interact within this system, thereby recreating the processes of societal operation. Throughout the experiment, Wenjing Mao closely observes the behaviors of these agents and continually adjusts the experimental rules based on her observations, recording the effects these changes have on the entire system. Through this agent-based modeling and simulation technique, she explores the mechanisms by which society operates under different conditions, skillfully transforming characters into digital life variables to reveal the intricate relationships between resources, the environment, and human destiny.
This work not only blends artificial intelligence technology with social simulation experiments but also deeply examines how collective behavior evolves. “Future Sample” demonstrates the complexity of human society through digital world interactions while also reflecting Mao’s profound contemplation of the future and her sense of social responsibility. Her research delves into the significant impact of the environment on individuals and society, exploring the various possibilities of human connections in future societies, and uncovering the endless potential and diversity of the future world.
