At 2024 CAA Graduation Exhibition, two graduates from Multiple Vision and Society Studio at CAA’s School of Design & Innovation, Zhang Jiaqi and Zhu Yihao, showcased their highly imaginative work titled “Tiange” which won a gold medal. The name “Tiange” in Chinese means songs from the sky, reflecting their unique understanding and artistic interpretation of the universe and astronomy.

In the artwork, “Tiange” symbolizes the dominion of the universe. It represents not only the music of the cosmos but also the melody, operational rules, and natural laws governing the universe. “Tiange” can be likened to a grand symphony performed by stars, planets, and other celestial bodies, showcasing the harmony and order of the cosmos. It also conveys the evolution of celestial principles, illustrating how the natural laws of the universe manifest in various forms and states across different time and space. Additionally, the work embodies the fusion of culture and philosophy, combining ancient Eastern philosophical ideas with modern scientific technology, demonstrating the profound impact of astronomy and its innovative applications in the context of contemporary science.

From the creators perspective, the operation of celestial principles adapts to various time and space environments, following a natural development process from beginning to end and exhibiting diverse characteristics. The sun, moon, and five major stars are located in specific regions near the ecliptic, which are divided into twenty-eight groups known as the Twenty-Eight Mansions. These symbolize the mysterious natural forces and Eastern philosophical wisdom.

The work integrates the ancient Chinese concept of star mansions with modern aerospace technology to create a futuristic astronomical landscape design. By reinterpreting the positions and symbolic meanings of the star mansions, it designs a visual system that merges ancient astronomy with modern technology. This design uses the universe as a stage, blending celestial principles, physics, logic, and art to narrate the spirit of contemporary space exploration and create a new vision for future Chinese cosmic culture.
