On 9 November 2024, artists from the China Academy of Art (CAA) in partnership with La Biennale di Venezia produced a group exhibition titled THE WIND MAKES THE SKY.  This is a special project by La Biennale di Venezia’s Historical Archive to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo (1324 – 2024). This was held at the CAA Art Museum in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

This exhibition celebrates the traces of Marco Polo, a young man who travelled through the familiar lands of the Middle East, through the Central Asian deserts, encountering a new world and becoming fully part of it. On the 700th anniversary of the death of his death, La Biennale di Venezia with its Historical Archive of the Contemporary Arts (ASAC) celebrates in Hangzhou, with the special support of the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai and the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai, his extraordinary abilities as a traveler and connoisseur of peoples with a special project.

This exhibition is the sign of the first collaboration arising from the three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed by La Biennale di Venezia and the China Academy of Art (CAA), with the intent to activate a series of exchange programmes and to promote a cultural and artistic dialogue between Italy and China. This group exhibition of contemporary art will run until 10 January 2025.

The second stage of the project will open in December 2024 in Venice, and the third stage in the fall of 2025 in Istanbul.
