The exhibition Lok & Calligraphy's Theme: Exhibition of Shum Lok Ping's Works opened at the Quan Shanshi Art Center in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, on Dec 7.
The exhibition brings together more than 160 masterful works by Shen Leping, professor at the China Academy of Art and deputy dean of its School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, showcasing his practical achievements and insights into the arts of calligraphy and seal cutting in recent years.
Born in Hangzhou in 1973, Shen enrolled at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (a predecessor of CAA) in 1993 and studied calligraphy and seal cutting under the tutelage of such masters as Liu Jiang, Zhang Zu'an and Chen Zhenlian. He began teaching at the CAA in 2002, and is now also a member of the China Calligraphers Association, member of the Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, and professor at Gifu Women's University in Japan.
He draws much inspiration from traditional calligraphy, while actively integrating modern aesthetics, forming a unique artistic style of his own. His calligraphic works cover various Chinese script styles.
Elegant and exquisite, Shen's seal-cutting art is highly regarded as well due to its liveliness and sharp lines, often blending with his calligraphy.
The exhibition runs until Dec 29.
