Qiu Zhijie, well-known Chinese artist and professor from the China Academy of Art is invited to exhibit his work The Jinling Historical Theater at the 56th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. When asked how to respond to the exhibition theme, “All The World’s Futures,” with his work, Qiu said that the work itself is a historical event which recycles like all other historical events in the human history thus the future is precoded as an objective experience. This is also the reason why we think that history repeats itself. We project this understanding when we talk about the future. Meanwhile the experience of showcasing the work also fits the sub-theme “The Garden of Disorder.”

In the past, Qiu Zhijie has participated in the 53rd International Art Exhibition as well as many other major art events. Considered a true intellectual in the Renaissance meaning of the word, Qiu Zhijie is an all around talent — a thinker, an artist, a cartographer and even an archivist of knowledge. No one can explore these intricate paths that span across time and space better than he does. As an artist Qiu Zhijie defines his moudus operandi as “total art,” centered on the awareness that artistic creation cannot be uprooted from the artist’s historical and cultural background.

The 56th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, entitled All The World’s Futures and curated by Okwui Enwezor, is open to the public from May 9th to November 22nd, 2015 at the Giardini and the Arsenale venues. 136 artists have been invited, of which 88 for the first time. They come from 53 countries, many of them from geographical areas that we paradoxically insist on defining as peripheral. Of the works on display, 159 are expressly realized for this year’s exhibition.
