On December 22, 2014, the third Chinese Painting Biennale held its grand opening in the Zhejiang Art Museum and will last till March 8, 2015. It is an influential exhibition of Chinese painting, which had been the highest art form and academic standard. There are 36 top artists from all over China gathered together in Hangzhou showcasing more than 500 works of great value, among whom are senior painters, young graduates with great potential as well as two foreigners artists with excellent mastering of the brushwork.

The theme of this years’ biennale is Chinese traditional album leaves, which is both a way of creating art works and also a unique way of appreciating and sharing paintings in the past. By revisiting this tradition, the biennale intends to overcome the habitual exhibition formats to revitalise the passion for Chinese painting research and practice, and to reform the daily condition of appreciating, making and exchanging from where Chinese painting originated. This can also be a good start to discuss its contemporary meaning and the core values of traditional culture.
