Introduction

“Design as Enlightenment—China Design Museum Bauhaus Collection Exhibition” will be exhibited in No. 10 Hall of the National Museum of China from September 28, 2014. This exhibition was sponsored by the Hangzhou Municipal Government and the China Academy of Art with the assistance of the National Museum of China. The exhibition lasts from September 28, 2014 to November 8, 2014. The related symposium will be held in its preface hall on September 29, 2014.

Themes

Bauhaus, honored as “a creative center in Europe”, is not only a school, but also a commune, a spiritual movement, a crusade of various forms of art and a core of philosophy.

As a torchbearer of design, Bauhaus invented the ground rules of modern design, enabling design an independent discipline, preparing the ground for modern design art education in its basic idea and patterns. Today, nearly all textbooks in architecture, design and art do not begin with Bauhaus. The Bauhaus system is a heritage of western civilization from industrial period, creative period to the development of industrial development, so it is not only of historic value, but an irreplaceable reference to the development of China’s industrial civilization.

As an enlightenment for design, Bauhaus’ inspiration to the contemporary era gets to every aspect of life. Bauhaus’ history is a mirror of the birth of the modern life-style and the road to revival of an industrial country. And Bauhaus’ advent is a source of thought and an overall energy that leads to updating China’s social development model.

Approximately 350 exhibits will be displayed in a 1000-square-meter hall, involving Bauhaus’ herald—Art Nouveau, Deutscher Werkbund, Bauhaus’ international clout, covering all the works of modernism design masters such as Walt Gropius, Macel Breuer, Herbert Bayer, Ludwig Mies Van De Rho, Wassily Kandinsky, etc., which can be said to be a striking proof of the history of modern design.

So far, this exhibition will be the largest one in scale that has ever demonstrated the Bauhaus Collection since it came to China. The China Design Museum set up by the National Museum of China keeps Asia’s largest Bauhaus Collection, involving urban planning, architectural design, industrial design, graphic design, dyeing & weaving design, paintings, sculpture, drama and relevant literature.

Centered on five aspects of “enlightenment” concerning the Bauhaus ideal, this exhibition gives us a Bauhaus blueprint from “small design” to “big design” and its inspiration to the contemporary life

“Enlightenment of thought”: demonstrates the “source” of the thought of modern design.

“Enlightenment of form & material”: demonstrates Bauhaus’ rudimentary contribution to design in its narrow sense.

“Enlightenment of education”: demonstrates the basic structure and avant-guard concept of modern art education established by Bauhaus.

“Enlightenment of production”: demonstrates Bauhaus’ efforts in his design to adapt to mass production.

“Enlightenment of daily life-style”: demonstrates how Bauhaus opened a modern life-style.

Meantime, in the form of “paradox”, from the angle of reflection and criticism, this exhibition will reveal a contradiction between the Bauhaus ideal and the reality, and a contemporary enlightenment drawn from this contradiction. So, we should critically absorb the essence of the Bauhaus ideas from a contemporary perspective in China.

A variety of modern methods will be applied to this exhibition: There is network terminal access like WeChat to the audience for them to know more about the author, historical background, etc. about the Bauhaus Collection so that they can experience and understand Bauhaus’ design and ideas. The Bauhaus story books on site are free for the audience to learn the Bauhaus’ link with the contemporary life by means of interesting stories devised. Besides, multimedia interactions and Bauhaus cartoons will be part of this exhibition. Also, there will be well-known contemporary designers specially invited to be engaged in design and creation of this exhibition.
