The department was derived from the program set in the Department of Environmental Design in 2005. It aims to train new landscape planners and designers with skills of engineering and aesthetic knowledge of humanism and the arts. Students are encouraged to learn from traditional Chinese philosophy, construction theory, gardening, contemporary art and design theory. The teaching is based on the southern garden and villages in China and attaches much importance on the integration of human and nature. There is a Landscape Lab in the department.
