As one of the pioneering fine arts institutions in China to offer Film Studies education and research, the School of Film Art was approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2011 to confer master's and doctoral degrees in Drama and Film Studies (First-Level Discipline). In 2012, it was designated as a Key First-Level Discipline in Zhejiang Province. In the third, fourth, and fifth rounds of MOE's National Discipline Assessment for Drama and Film Studies, the School ranked 5th nationally and achieved a "B+" rating.
Grounded in the essence of cinema and dedicated to exploring the future of visual storytelling, the School focuses on building a community of filmmakers with a strong auteur consciousness and poetic aesthetics, leveraging its strengths in directing, cinematography, and art direction. It offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs across four majors: Theater and Film Directing, Cinematography and Film Production, Theater and Film Art Design, and Photography. The academic framework is organized into four departments—Directing, Production, Art, and Cinematography—alongside research platforms such as the China Institute for Advanced Film Studies. The School is committed to cultivating three tiers of talent: filmmakers with humanistic spirit and critical thinking; research-oriented professionals who are technically adept, socially engaged, and culturally informed; and creative specialists capable of operating across the broader image-based ecosystem. Ultimately, the School aims to nurture the next generation of filmmakers for China.
The School is equipped with state-of-the-art platforms, including the China Institute for Advanced Film Studies, the Zhejiang Provincial Joint Graduate Training Base for Film Directors, the Dual-Vivid Innovation Demonstration Center, and the Virtual Production Teaching and Practice Base. Comprehensive laboratory facilities support teaching, research, and industry-academia collaboration, featuring a full-pipeline production platform, a PR rapid prototyping lab, prop-making and special effects makeup labs, film and still photography studios, a darkroom and digital output room, sound design and Foley studios, a 7.1.4 film mixing studio, and a color grading suite.
Leveraging an open and shared environment for experimentation and innovation, the School continuously expands students' hands-on experience in full-pipeline design, virtual production, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Graduates are active in film and television advertising, internet creative industries, and filmmaking, growing into auteurs and creative clusters capable of responding to contemporary challenges and participating in global cinematic dialogues.
