Chinese Painting
All Schools

Independently founded in 2023, the School of Chinese Painting of China Academy of Art traces its origins to the traditional Chinese painting courses offered by the National Academy of Art in 1928, and was formally established as a department in 1958. It inherits two century-old academic lineages: Lin Fengmian's vision of "Integration of Chinese and Western Art" and Pan Tianshou's commitment to "Innovation Rooted in Tradition". Centered on fostering virtue through arts education, the school takes "Innovation from Tradition" as its core philosophy, with two key development priorities: integration of art and technology, and global cultural communication. It aims to cultivate interdisciplinary Chinese painting talents with comprehensive mastery of moral integrity, art theories, ancient and modern arts, as well as Chinese and global cultures.

The school currently provides three specialized tracks of Chinese painting: figure painting, landscape painting and flower-and-bird painting, covering undergraduate, master's and doctoral degree programs, and also admits international students. Balancing classical ink heritage and contemporary creation, it collaborates with digital media and artificial intelligence to expand the expressive boundaries of traditional brush art, building practical platforms for integrating ancient painting techniques and modern technology. It regularly holds international art exhibitions and academic exchanges to facilitate cross-cultural communication and promote Chinese painting worldwide. Renowned modern and contemporary masters including Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou, Wu Fuzhi, Zhu Lesan, Gu Kunbo, Lu Yanshao once taught here, laying a solid academic foundation for the Zhejiang School of Chinese Painting. Its graduates work in universities, museums and creative industries globally, capable of engaging in international artistic dialogue.
